FEATURE CLIENT: Lue Ella

After Lue Ella's smoke alarm went off unprovoked for the umpteenth time, she began to get a little embarrassed.

"I said, 'I promise, I ain't going to call ya'll anymore,'" she recalled telling the firefighters who kept coming over to shut the alarm off. "But they said, 'No, no. That's what we're here for.'"

In July, Lue Ella became one of the many MOWAM clients to receive a new, long-battery smoke alarm from the Austin Fire Department. Recently, they were awarded a grant from the US Department of Homeland Security to continue the program across the city.

Thanks to you, Lue Ella and her husband have been receiving meals from MOWAM for five years now, ever since her husband lost his leg in a car accident. At 85, after working most of her life as a cotton picker and a hospital custodian, Lue Ella is not able to drive any more and small chores are now much more difficult.

When asked what she would tell others in her situation about Meals on Wheels and More, she said, "I would say, 'Call them. They'll help you.'"
