Feature Volunteer: Casie Wenmohs

Volunteer Casie Wenmohs launched a grassroots effort
to raise money for MOWAM's building expansion.

Recently, Meals on Wheels and More volunteer Casie Wenmohs opened her newspaper to find a full-page ad regarding MOWAM's fundraising campaign to build a 22,000-square-foot addition to our headquarters on East 5th Street. The ad explains that MOWAM must expand our facilities if we want to continue serving the homebound elderly and disabled population in Central Texas. City demographers predict that by 2020 there will be 214,000 seniors in Travis County and that this population will comprise 10 percent of the population!

Wenmohs immediately identified with the campaign and planned to make a personal donation to the building. But then she stopped herself. "I realized that I could take my personal knowledge of the significance of the work Meals on Wheels and More does in the community to encourage my friends to give, too," she said.

Wenmohs jumped on her computer and sent a challenge to all of her friends: for every dollar they donated to the cause, she give a $0.50 match. Within days, Wenmohs' generous friends had contributed $650, which she matched with $325. Wenmohs' effort shows the power of grassroots efforts and also how much impact small gestures can have on an organization. MOWAM thanks Wenmohs and all of her friends that donated to help MOWAM continue it's mission in the Austin community!
